A native of San Jose, California, Paul was ordained to gospel ministry in 2010. Before coming to Starnes Cove Baptist Church, he served churches in California, Kentucky, and Louisiana, and he also served in collegiate ministry at the University of Louisville. He came to Starnes Cove from Louisville, Kentucky where he worked in the Office of Online Learning at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and where he earned a Ph.D. in Church History and Historical Theology. He has taught for Southern Seminary and Boyce College, as well as Gateway Seminary in California. He has also taught in Latin America in Ecuador and Guatemala.
Paul wrote his dissertation on the history of Baptist life in North Carolina from the 1870s–1930s. Archival research sent him across the state to Winston-Salem, Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, and to other sites across the southeastern United States. His interest in North Carolina began as an intellectual curiosity, but his work on Baptist history sparked an interest in pastoral ministry in the state. He accepted the call to pastor Starnes Cove in June 2020.
Paul is passionate about the ministry of the word: preaching and teaching the Scriptures with the goal of equipping the church for the Great Commission and the advancement of the kingdom of God. His vision for the church focuses on depth and authenticity in discipleship, engagement with and service to our community, a gospel impulse to the nations, and the experience of loving fellowship within the church body. The church holds its core values—worship, discipleship, service, missions, and fellowship—to magnify the glory of God.
